Alexander Cowan, Development Geography
Graduated in 2008
Since completing my Development Geography and Geography degrees at BSU, I have moved to Victoria, BC in Canada. I am currently here as a temporary resident and a few months away from my permanent residency status which will enable me to apply for a wider range of jobs. I am currently working as an oceaneer at an aquarium called the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre in a town called Sidney. My role means I talk to guests about the species at the aquarium which is a not-for-profit and only has local species for a short amount of time. Most of the species are smaller species but there is a giant pacific octopus and a wolf eel there also. I also give educational talks to groups of school children. While in Canada, I have also worked as a naturalist at Elk/Beaver Lake regional park. This involves informing people about local species around the lake, and undertaking animal care duties. I am also a Park Host for BC parks every second weekend. In this role as a junior Park Ranger I camp in Ruckle Provincial Park on Saltspring Island and give campers help such as firewood chopping, species identification and map directions.
