Food Business Centre

Bath Spa University Food Business Centre was set up in response to the increasing demand for consultancy, training and research services by industry. The centre is situated within Food Studies, Department of Biology and Food, which has a reputation for high quality teaching based on scholarship, research and practical experience of the food industry. It houses the Centre for Food Product Development and the Western Food and Health Forum.

This centre has contributed to Inspire South West, a project jointly funded by the South West Regional Development Agency (SWRDA) and the European Commission and aimed to promote technological innovation in SMEs. Using both novel and traditional means, Inspire SW endeavoured to facilitate the transfer and application of new technologies to the food supply chain, with a particular focus on food quality and safety.

We (BANES and Food Studies at Bath Spa University) have also been successful in obtaining funding (£55,310) from the Food Standards Agency for a joint project: Safer Food Better Business Implementation Project – Bath and North East Somerset. The aim of this project is to extend the implementation of the Safer Food Better Business toolkit to qualifying premises not included in previous trials. A total of 330 premises will be targeted in the area.

Centre for Food Product Development

The centre has had several nutrition, product development, food microbiology and food law consultancy projects. These have ranged from conducing short trouble-shooting projects to longer projects lasting several months. It has also provided bespoke training courses for the industry.
