This page contains links to professional bodies and learned societies that relate to courses run by the School. Where appropriate such bodies recognise our courses and/or sponsor student prizes. Visit these organisations to find information on future career options.
Institute of Biology (IoB)
The Institute of Biology is the professional body for UK biologists. It was founded in 1950, obtained a Royal Charter in 1979, and is a registered charity. Its 12,000 members work in industry, research, education and healthcare, amongst other areas.
The IoB sponsors an annual student prize for the best performance in Biology within the School.
Institute of Ecology & Enviromental Management (IEEM)
Established in 1991, IEEM has over 3,500 members drawn from local authorities, government agencies, industry, environmental consultancy, teaching/research, and NGOs.
IEEM is the professional body that represents and supports ecologists and environmental managers in the UK, Ireland and abroad. It provides a variety of services to develop competency and standards in ecology and environmental management.
Students studying Ecological Impact Assessment at Honours or Masters Level are eligible to apply for student membership.
Institute of Food Science and Technology (IFST)
IFST is the leading independent qualifying body for food professionals in Europe and the only professional body in the UK concerned with all aspects of food science and technology.
The School's course BSc (Hons) Food, Nutrition and Consumer Protection is accredited for membership purposes by the IFST: on completion, our students can apply to be graduate members of the institute without undertaking further training.
The Tourism Society
The Tourism Society is the professional membership body for people working in all sectors of the visitor economy.
With around 1000 members in the UK and worldwide, the Society was founded in 1977 with the aim of driving up standards of professionalism in a fast-growing global industry which can have major social, economic and environmental impacts on communities and nations.
The Tourism Management course at Bath Spa is affiliated to the society.
Chartered Institute of Wastes Management (CIWM)
The Chartered Institution of Wastes Management is a leading professional body for waste and resource management.
They have over 7,000 members, mostly in the UK but also in the Irish Republic and 250 members elsewhere in the world. Their focus is on professionalism and information, based on sound science and training.
Students studying wastes management at Honours Level are eligible to become student members and CIWM sponsors an annual student prize at Bath Spa for such work.
British Ecological Society (BES)
The BES is an active and thriving organisation with something to offer anyone with an interest in ecology. Academic jourals, teaching, resources, meetings for scientists and policy makers, careers advice and grants for ecologists are just a few of the Society's areas of activity.
The Nutrition Society
Established in 1941, the goal of The Nutrition Society is to "advance the scientific study of nutrition and its application to the maintenance of human and animal health".
The Nutrition Society is the largest learned society for nutrition in Europe and students are encouraged to become student members of the Nutrition Society in the second year of their degree.
On graduation, students can apply for Associate Registration with The Nutrition Society.
