Bath Spa Joins Elite in Environmental Performance
14th June 2010
Bath Spa University has joined an elite group of universities awarded
'first class honours' for their environmental performance.
The People and Planet Green League 2010 ranked Bath Spa 11th out of
133 UK universities for its environmental policy and performance in
areas such as carbon reduction, waste recycling, energy efficiency,
transport emissions, sustainable procurement and water consumption.
Bath Spa University's ranking is 51 places higher than it achieved
in the Green League last year. This meteoric rise shows one of the
biggest improvements for any UK university.
Bath Spa has an ambitious Carbon Management Plan in operation
detailing projects that will reduce its carbon emissions by 50% by 2020.
This compares particularly well to performance in the universities
sector as a whole which, according to People and Planet, is emitting 25%
more carbon than it did five years ago and making slow progress towards
sector-wide climate targets.
Bath Spa University Vice-Chancellor Professor Frank Morgan
commented: "This is an outstanding result for the University, and my
congratulations go to all staff and students who have embraced a culture
of environmental improvement with such enthusiasm."
Bath Spa's success in the Green League follows its EcoCampus Gold
award achieved in March, again in recognition of progress in reducing
environmental impacts and continuous improvement in environmental
issues.
