Healthy Eating Message To Schools From Bath Spa University Experts
4th February 2009
With the rise in childhood and teenage obesity causing nationwide
concern, Bath Spa University has organised a special event for young
people to encourage healthier eating.
More than 150 sixth formers from 15 local secondary schools and
colleges will be attending the annual Food and Nutrition Awareness Day
at the University's Newton Park campus on 6 February.
Staff and students from the University's Food and Nutrition courses
will be on hand to give them expert advice on healthy eating, diet,
exercise and lifestyle, specially geared towards young people.
There will be sessions on topics ranging from obesity and weight-watching to food packaging and perceptions about food.
Bath Spa University's School of Science and the Environment has a
long-established Food Studies division. The number of students on its
food and nutrition courses has doubled since 2004.
In the most recent National Student Survey, for 2008, Food Studies
at Bath Spa University achieved an overall satisfaction rating of 96
per cent - the highest for any UK university in that subject area.
The food and drink industry is the UK's largest manufacturing
sector, employing about half a million people. However, despite the
economic downturn, the industry has a serious shortage of graduates
with food-related degrees.
Dr Anil de Sequeira, Subject Leader for Food Studies at Bath Spa
University, commented: "The University has a long tradition of
providing vocational courses that train the food and nutrition
professionals of tomorrow. We see our role in the broader scheme of
education, providing advice and support as well as high calibre
graduates to work in the food and nutrition sector."
Bath Spa University's Food and Nutrition Awareness Day takes place
on Friday 6 February from 10 am to 2.30 pm, based at the Michael
Tippett Centre on the Newton Park campus.
