Geography

Overview

Overview

Geography is ‘the best of both worlds’ combining the earth and social sciences and bridging the traditional gap between them by using integrating constructs, such as sustainability, development, management and temporal change. At Bath Spa University you will learn geographical knowledge and gain geographical skills, thereby enhancing your employability. We aim to enable you to become either an ‘all-round’ geographer or to specialize in areas that interest you, and in which you excel.

Field work is central to the Bath Spa learning experience and most modules have a field day. You will visit  places and landscapes such as Avebury, Mendip, the Somerset Levels, the Welsh National History Museum, the Royal Geographical Society in London and the Jurassic Coast.

Residential courses currently go to Liverpool and Barcelona. You can also participate in a development project overseas, or take a European university exchange.

Another feature of the course is the widespread use of digital techniques, now known as ‘geomatics’. You will have access to specialist software and hardware such as ArcGIS and GPS-based survey equipment.

In addition, you will learn to use field sampling and laboratory instruments for sediment and water analysis, and develop a unique combination of ‘people’ skills such as communication, team work and critical thinking – skills that are highly valued by employers.

After first year, in which you will take a second subject, BSc Geography enables you to follow different routes through the module menu, such as physical or human specialities, with sustainable development and geomatics options applicable to both. Everyone takes one core module in Geography each year: the options are up to you.

Whichever path you take, your learning will benefit from our excellent facilities, small class sizes and academic staff who combine teaching expertise with their own research at the cutting edge of the discipline.

Our graduates possess a diverse range of skills, knowledge and expertise suitable for many careers and occupations. This is due to the great appeal of your geographical skill set to employers. Environmental bodies, utilities, planning, police and armed forces, retail and financial services, heritage management, local government and school teaching are typical destinations.

Many geography graduates are hooked on the subject and undertake further study, including doctoral research here in the department.
