Dr Andrew Smart, Senior Lecturer: Sociology
I am a Senior Lecturer in Sociology in the Department of Social Science. I joined the department in 2005 from Oxford University, where I was a Research Officer at The Ethox Centre, Department of Public Health and Primary Health Care. Prior to this I worked at Nottingham University and Brunel University, and I worked and studied at Plymouth University (BSc and PhD).
At BSU I co-ordinate the following courses: ‘Ethnic Diversity and Racism’, ‘Dissertation in Sociology and Health Studies’ and ‘Research Methods’ for Health Studies MSc. students. I am also responsible for teaching the qualitative half of ‘Social Science Research Methods’ at level 5. In addition, I oversee the Sociology and Health Studies Staff-Student Committee.
I have developed an expertise in applying sociology and social research methods to issues relating to genetics and biomedicine. I have worked independently and in a number of interdisciplinary teams to address issues such as: media coverage of human genetics; the clinical and commercial development of pharmacogenetics; patient experiences of genetic testing for inherited cardiac disorders; the use of race and ethnicity in genetic research; and, the governance of biobanks. This research has largely been funded by the Wellcome Trust (including project grants on ‘Race/ ethnicity and genetics’ and the ‘Governance of biobanks’ and also a dissemination award for ‘Human Genomic Diversity in Biomedical Practice’). I have numerous single author and co-authored publications in high quality journals in sociology, bioethics, law and medicine/healthcare. I have co-authored a book called Governing Biobanks which is planned for publication in 2010.
