Dr Iain Haysom, Course Leader: Diet and Health
I graduated with a microbiology based BSc (Hons) in Biological Science from the University of Leicester in 1991.
I then worked as a food microbiologist and a consultant to the food
industry for a number of organisations including Safeway and SGS UK Ltd
where I carried out routine microbiological investigations of foods,
investigated customer complaints, and established product shelf lives,
as well as carrying out hygiene inspections, investigations into
specific microbiological problems and general consultancy work.
I returned to academia in 1996 as a research assistant at
University of Surrey, Roehampton where I undertook a PhD in
Microbiological Contamination in the Home.
I joined Bath Spa in 2001 to lecture in food safety and food
quality. Since that time I have developed new modules in Disease and
Public Health, Public Health Nutrition and Food Safety and am now Course Leader for the Diet And Health degree
programme.
My research interests focus on microbial contamination in the home,
HACCP, understanding consumers' awareness of food safety and food
hygiene and using this information to inform food safety programmes.
I am also the Erasmus coordinator for the School of Science Society and Management.
