Changing Landscapes Research Group
Consultancy Services
CLRG staff are actively involved in income-generating activities and can provide consultancy services in a wide range of areas covering both the natural and built environment. Such consultancy services primarily complement the research themes of the Group.
As an example, Tom Hill provides palaeoenvironmental and geoarchaeological consultancy services. In accordance with the Government's Planning Policy Statement 5: Planning for the Historic Environment, it is often necessary to evaluate the past landscape history of areas requiring planning permission for the approval of future development. Site assessments can be undertaken in order to evaluate the palaeoenvironmental potential of sedimentary archives at risk of destruction through proposed development. Such site evaluations are supported by subsequent laboratory analysis to assess past landscape change and proxy evidence of past human activity/occupation (pollen and diatom analysis for example).
Richard Johnson provides applied geomorphological services to national and international clients considering issues associated with rivers, landslides, coastal margins, and upland windfarms. His particular areas of expertise relates to river catchments, including the characterisation/ reconnaissance of channel corridors; flood impact and sediment dynamics assessments; appraisal of engineering structure addition or removal; and integrated channel restoration and design. Richard continues to provide specialist professional advice to clients on these issues. In recognition of such practice and continuing professional development in these fields, Richard is both a Chartered Geologist (CGeol) and Geomorphologist (CGeog [Geomorph]).
