Field trips

Posted 6th March 2009 in 'Field Trips', by Jo-Anne

Environmental Science is a particularly valuable subject to study as it not only involves academic writing, but allows you to gain a range of practical skills in the field and laboratory which are essential for a career in the environmental sector. Ecological modules in particular have allowed me to enhance my group working skills and conduct floristic surveys on campus and on residential field trips to Galway, Ireland and Pembrokeshire, Wales, which are then complemented by soil and data analysis back in the laboratory. And of course, with the opportunity to get to know people on your course better and socialise with them in the evenings, field trips are always very popular with us students!! There are also a number of day trips linked to modules that allow you to get better insight into environmental processes and management. I have been to Lynmouth to look at the effects and management of river flooding and although I’m half way through the third year, there is still a lot more to come like a trip to a landfill and sewage treatment works to look at waste management; the list is endless...
